It gets better…

If you are reading this, I just want to tell you that yes, the rumours are true, it does get better.

You might be feeling down and depressed. Maybe you come from the wrong side of town, maybe you have nowhere to go, maybe you feel alone and lost and confused, maybe you feel like your friends are ignoring you, maybe you’ve broken up with the person you believed to have been the love of your life, maybe you’ve lost someone close to you and maybe you’re just sad for no reason at all. Just know that you are good enough and that things do get better OK?

If you are a teenager, I am so sorry. I really am because I know how hard this period of time in your life can be. Its filled with feelings of self doubt and self worthlessness. Its easy to feel alone and ignored, like nobody understands you. Your friends seem to like each other more than they like you. You’re constantly afraid that they’ll stop being your friend all together. I get these feelings, I’ve been through it, trust me. In my home town, I had friends, but, I always felt like they weren’t gonna be there for me in my time of need. They weren’t really gonna be my Harry, Ron and Hermione. If you are feeling this, just know that its totally normal for a person your age to feel this way. I’m a psychology major and I know that teenager years can very much be the worst years of a person’s life because we are so damn vulnerable at this point. Our identities are still being formed and we need other people’s validation constantly. So, teens, know that you are not alone. Thousands of kids are going through the exact same things you might be going through! You will have bad days, you just have to get up and go one. Please do not think about self harm or suicide. Please, please, I literally am on my knees begging you here. Think of yourself as being in a tunnel. Its dark, its cold and you might wanna give up and not move forward because you are depressed or scared, but, the light is always there at the end, waiting for you!

One of my friends loves Les Miserables and makes me listen to the songs always. One line particularly stood out to me:

” Even the darkest nights will end and the sun will rise.”

So, follow their advice and carry on.
